Pick the feature you would miss
| Your priority | Start here | The first choice inside that guide |
|---|---|---|
| Graduated rotating bezel; with or without a date | Submariner | Earlier 114060/116610LN or newer 124060/126610LN design family, then date or no date. |
| Date window with a classic fixed surround | Datejust | Compare 36 and 41 while keeping bezel, dial and bracelet style constant. |
| Full weekday plus date | Day-Date | Language and full-word readability, then the 36/40 fit direction. |
If none of those is the feature you want, use the ten-design comparison rather than forcing a choice among these three. The Seamaster guide is the next stop for different dial, bezel and family layouts.
This is a configuration guide. Original reference names identify design baselines; replica dimensions and functions belong to the particular example. The invented case below shows how to use that distinction, not a product test or seller comparison.

Worked shortlist: the preferred size loses to an essential feature
Hypothetical teaching case. A reader wants an English weekday, a champagne-colour dial and a comfortably fitted bracelet. A compact case is a preference, while English is essential. Both candidates are assumed to have an identified functioning calendar; no reliability or origin ranking is part of the example.
| Field | A: 36-style Day-Date | B: 40-style Day-Date | Decision effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language supplied | French only in the offered configuration | English | A misses the essential language requirement. |
| Weekday reading | Complete words, but not the selected language | All seven English words complete at the reader's usual viewing distance | Good printing does not turn A into an English configuration. |
| Fit observation | Comfortable and centred | Comfortable and centred after the documented bracelet adjustment | B is not eliminated merely because its nominal size is larger. |
| Appearance preference | The reader prefers its compact outline | The larger outline is acceptable | A preference cannot supply a missing essential function. |
| Result | Exclude this offered configuration | Choose B for this reader | No unexplained grade or material claim is needed to make the choice. |
The useful alternative is to find a 36-style example actually supplied in English, not to pretend the French disc satisfies the requirement or assume a replacement is straightforward. That new candidate would need its own fit and calendar comparison. If a weekday were merely optional, the date-only Datejust could also enter the shortlist.
Compare the movement after the design fits the task
Within the same chosen configuration, movement information becomes a separate comparison. The movement guide explains origin, maker, calibre and decoration, and sets named manufacturer mechanisms beside their dated specifications. It supplies a reference framework, rather than identifying an unknown watch from its dial.
Use the function checks for a demonstrated calendar or setting behavior. Then use the inspection record to connect the agreed configuration with the watch received. Choose among candidates that meet the essentials; use finish and appearance to break a genuine tie.
